ANNUAL REPORT FOR EAGLE-GYPSUM MINE, PERMIT M-84-041
12-18-87 page 2
The area which was seeded in late 1986 was inspected, and it was
found that only a minor amount of the seed appeared to have
germinated, or survived after germination, although a substantial
growth of "tumbleweeds" did germinate. The soil in the area is
very poor, being primarily weathered gypsum. Another attempt will
be made to seed this area without removing the tumbleweeds in the
hope that the shade from them might improve moisture conditions
for germination.
Also during 1987, the extreme north end of the disturbed area at
the location of new mining activity was reclaimed by replacing
topsoil over some of the operation and storage area not
anticipated to be needed for the 1988 activity. The area was
seeded and some shrubs were transplanted from the area
anticipated to be stripped for 1988 mining. Slash from the 1987
clearing operation was also spread over the area in an effort to
improve moisture retention and seed germination. No fertilizer or
soil conditioners were used other than the natural organic
material from the 1987 clearing.
During 1987, approximately 30,000 tons of crushed and sized gypsum
rock was produced and shipped from the mine.
The area anticipated to be affected by mining activity in 1988 is
shown in yellow on the Annual Report Map, and contains
approximately 2.2 acres.
EAGLE -GYPSUM, LIMITED
