Final West Elk Mine 2005 Annual Hydrology Report
35
• Panel 19 headgate E2 crosscut 34
• Panel 19 headgate E3 crosscut 40
A summary of the mine water quality is presented in Appendix H.
4.6 Mine Water Balance
The mine water balance was developed as a tool used to quantify the water entering and leaving the
mine. The WY 2005 mine water balance is summarized below and illustrated on Figure 8.
Inflows (water entering the mine) include:
• Raw water intake (North Fork diversion, 638.8 ac-ft)
• Mine Inflows (faults, coal outcrops, and drips, 125.0 ac-ft)
• Total Inflow = 763.8 ac-ft
•
Outflows (water exiting the mine) include:
• Water in produced coal and GOB (243 ac-ft)
• Mine sump discharge and drilling water (414 ac-ft)
• Mine ventilation moisture (50 ac-ft)
• Miscellaneous mine seepage and evaporation (20 ac-ft)
• Pond evaporation (22 ac-ft)
• Runoff from surface operations\pond discharge (282.5 ac-ft)
• Total Outflow = 1,031.5 ac-ft
The total volume of water entering the mine during WY 2005 was 763.8 ac-ft versus a total
outflow of 1,031.5 ac-ft, a net difference of 267.7 ac-ft, which went mostly to surface operation
discharges.
5.0 ASSESSMENT OF MINE-INDUCED HYDROLOGIC IMPACTS AND
ANTICIPATED IMPACTS IN WY 2006
5.1 Surface Water
MCC maintains a network of 22 stream flow gauging stations throughout the permit and lease areas
(Table 2). The locations of the surface water monitoring stations are shown on Map 2. Daily mean
flow summary tables are presented in Appendix A. Surface water flow hydrographs are presented
in Appendix B and the field and laboratory surface water quality data are presented in Appendix C.
5.1.1 Impacts to Area Stream Water Quantity and Quality
The West Elk Mine mining activity has approached only two perennial streams in the Project Area,
Minnesota Creek and Deep Creek.
