Lafarge West, Inc. Howe Pit
Bull Seep 2002 Reclamation Report
been subsequently compacted during further construction and tree planting
activities along the channel. The channel side slopes were not ripped since they
were inaccessible to equipment due to steep slopes and loose soil conditions.
After ripping the level areas, a tine harrowing operation was conducted with an
ATV to further prepare the seedbed. The accessible channel side slopes were
harrowed parallel to the contour where slope and access allowed safe equipment
operation.
Mesic Shrub Transplanting
Lafarge's reclamation plan includes an upland stem density planted on
ten-foot centers. The upland seed mix included a significant shrub and forb
component to establish these lifeforms from seed. A total of four mesic shrub
species including 96 each of Peachleaf willow (Salix am~gdaloides), Bebb's willow
(Salix bebbiana), Coyote willow (Salix exigua), and thinleaf alder (Alms tenuifolia)
were transplanted into a 0.82 acre portion along the Bull Seep Relocation channel
(Exhibit 1) between May 27 and 30, 2002. The willows were established in 10
cubic inch tubling containers and the alder were in one-gallon containers. A total
of 384 shrubs were planted on approximately 10 foot centers resulting in a
density of approximately 468 stems per acre. The shrubs were planted in a
narrow zone above the normal water pool elevation where soil moisture was
present (Exhibit 1). Each transplant received one 21-gram 'Agriform' fertilizer
tablet with an analysis of 20-10-5 (N-P-K) for supplemental nutrients during
initial establishment.
Riparian Herbaceous Transplanting
A total of 4,010 riparian herbaceous species were transplanted between
May 27 and 30 in the Bull Seep reconstructed channel bottom between survey
stations 38+00 and 58+00 (Exhibit 1). No riparian transplant material was
Habitat Management, Inc. 2 03/27/03
