EFCI Southfield Mine -Year 2006 Annual Hydrology Report Apri125,2007 3.3 Surface Water Monitoring Results 3.3.1 Mine Area The Mine and adjacent azeas fall within the lower portions of the Magpie and Newlin Creek drainages and encompass the central portion of the Second Alkali Creek drainage, all of which are tributary to the Arkansas River. Newlin Creek is a perennial drainage above the mine property to the diversion point for the City of Florence Municipal Water Supply. Within the mine property, flows in Newlin, Magpie, and Second Alkali Creeks are all ephemeral (refer to Section 2.04.7 of the Southfield Mining and Reclamation Plan document for more details). EFCI monitors stream flows in Newlin, Magpie, and Second Alkali Creeks. EFCI also monitors any storm water runoff dischazge from active sedimentation structures and historically monitored any mine water discharge from the mine water treatment system, which included Fresh Water Pond No. 3, under the terms of an approved CDPS Pemrit. In addition to the mine water treatment and storage ponds, there were originally three sedimentation ponds, Sedimentation Ponds 1, 4, and 5, in the Mine Area. In the Mine Area, the current surface water monitoring program includes the following monitoring stations, located as shown on Figure 1, Mine Monitoring Locations: Station Location NC-2 E''/zSE'/ Section 26 T20S, R70W NC-1 W'/zNE'/ Section 19 T20S, R69W MC-1 E'/zNW'/< Section 30 T20S, R69W MC-2 W'/zNE'/< Section 30 T20S, R69W SA-1 E'/~NW'/a Section 24 T20S, R70W 002 E%zNW'/< Section 30 T20S, R69W 004 W'/zSE'/< Section 19 T20S, R69W Designation Newlin Creek Up stream Newlin Creek Down Stream Magpie Creek Up stream Magpie Creek Down Stream Second Alkali Creek Pond 4 Outlet (Newlin Ck) NPDES Pond 5 Outlet (Newlin Ck) NPDES Monitoring Stations 001 (Pond 1 Outlet to Magpie Creek) and 003 (Pond 3 Outlet to Magpie Creek) were previously included in the monitoring program. Ponds 1, 2, and 3 have, however, been removed and reclaimed in conjunction with final mine reclamation activities and Stations 001 and 003 have been eliminated from ongoing monitoring. EFCI also no longer includes data from the single monitoring point that existed on Newlin Creek prior to second quarter of 1997, when the two current monitoring points were established. Data from the original Newlin Creek monitoring point (NC-1) was included in previous Annual Hydrology Reports. As of October 2003 in accordance with Technical Revision 35 (TR-35), monitoring of surface water is now conducted on a semi- annualbasis, typically in April and December. Field and laboratory analysis data for surface water monitoring stations are summarized in the following discussions.
