Counts
per second (CPS) for West. Sunday ranged from 1,600 to 2,500. CPS for the outcrop ranged
' from 3,000 to 6,000. Field data aze included as Attachment I. According to miners with
extensive experience in the area of these mines, there are "dozens" of similar places which would
have similar levels of radioactivity (i.e., much higher than at West Sunday Dump). This suggests
that the mine waste rock creates no greater level of exposure or risk than is present naturally in
' the azea.
' 2.6 Soils
' The Sunday and West Sund+ty Mines aze located on the south wall of Big Gypsum Valley. Most
of the site is on steeply sloping shale outcrops that blend into a gently sloping and rolling valley
floor having a northern aspect. Exhibit I in the West Sunday Mine permit provides soils
information obtained from 'the Soil Conservation Service in Norwood, Colorado. The permit
' includes soils mapping unit descriptions and vegetation information. Map Exhibit I-2 (included
as Figure 1) shows that the Sunday and West Sunday Mine properties lie within Soil 60: the
' Gaynor-Sixmile bouldery clay loam.
' Soil map unit 60 is describ~:d as Gaynor-Sixmile bouldery clay loam, 5 to 50 percent slopes.
This map unit is on sloping to very steep benches and terraces below escarpments. The native
' vegetation is mainly pinyon pine, Utah juniper trees and grasses. Elevation is 5,400 to 6,800 feet.
H\USFRS~WT1\WMUtFUtITlA595\WSUNSUN PPf

Pegc 5
