• 6.3.3 Oil and Hazardous Substance Control
All company employees are informed of oil and hazardous substances located on the mine site
during new employee orientation and later through annual refresher training. A complete set of
Material Safety Data Sheets are provided in the lunch room to identify hazards, fire protection
methods, first aid treatment, etc. far each chemical at the plant. An updated list of MSDS sheets
(chemicals) was submitted to the BLM in 2001.
6.3.4 Waste Disposal
Common domestic solid waste is collected in containers and periodically transported to an
approved landfill. Sewage from the plant is directed to a septic system with drain field. Sewage
from temporary port-a-potties is collected and hauled to an off site disposal system. In 2001,
• two barrels of lab reagent waste and one barrels of waste oil were shipped to an approved off
site facility for treatment and disposal. Lab waste was considered hazardous waste because of
chromium and silver content greater than EPA limits. Process wastewater including boiler
blowdown, plant washdown, and contaminated precipitation runoff was directed to the process
pond. A pump in the process pond allows WRN to recycle the water to the barren system. To
remove solids from the process pond a passive removal system was installed in the early fall. A
portable pipe was added to the e~asting discharge pipe in order to run excess hot water over
built up solids. The theory being to dissolve solids and reprocess them. The wastewater pond
stores water from cooling tower blowdown, water softener brine, and blowdown from the water
heaters.
. 94
