4.0 RECOMMENDATIONS
In the interest of attempting to increase species diversity and reduce competition from cheatgrass,
Cedar Creek rernmmends that the North Decline Area be treated with a cheatgrass herbicde, Oust or
preferably Plateau, very early during the spring of 2005". After several weeks, afollow-up interseeding
should take place. Application of the herbicide must coincide with the initial °green-up" of the cheatgrass
in early spring prior to any other speces breaking domwncy. The interseeding should be heavily
weighted toward cool and warm-season grasses and perennial fortis /sub-shrubs, which are presently
absent or in kwv abundance throughout much of the revegetation. The interseeding should occur by
pedestrian means using heft mounted /hand operated seed distributors ("whiriygigs'~. Mechanical
measures will disturb the soil surface thereby further encouraging cheatgrass emergence. The 17.7-aae
North Decline Area could be interseeded In this manner in 10 to 12 man-hours. A recommended mix for
this interseeding effort would be as follows:
S ies Lbs acre Seeds / ft
Warm-season Grasses
Galleta Pleuraphis jamesii 2.0 7.30
Alkali sacaton Sporobolus airoides 0.5 20.18
Cool-season Grasses
Crested wheatgrass Agropyron cris[atum 1.0 4.59
Thickspike wheatgrass Elymus lanceolatus ssp. !. 2.0 7.07
Russian Wildrye Psathyrostachysjunceus 1.0 4.02
Sandberg Bluegrass Poa sandbergii 0.25 5.31
Great Basin Wildrye Elymus cinereus 0.5 2.98
Perennial Fortis & Subshrobs
Palmer penstemon Penstemon Palmeri 0.25 7.00
Prostrate kochia Kochia prostra[a 1.0 9.36
GardnerSaltbush Atrip/exgardneri 1.0 2.56
Winterfat Krascheninnikovia lana[a 2.0 2.60
Shrubs
Shadsole Atriplex confertifolia 0.5 0.74
Black oreasewood Sarcobatus vermiculatus 0.5 2.41
TOTAL 12.5 76.12
In the interest of increasing plant cover, especially wane-season grass cover, on some of the thinner
areas of the South Fan and 2 West Portals areas, interseeding with the above seed mix is recommended
in the spring of 2005. It is estimated that approximately 0.5 acres of revegetation should be seeded by
Cedar Creek should be consultedrf Snowcap decides to pursue this coarse of action as use of these herbicides is
very time critical. Application at the wrong time or under the wrong conditions may result in severe damage to the
e>asting desirable revegetation.
SNOWCAP COAL COMPArrY Page 16 Revegetatlon Evaluatbn 2004
