Refuse Area #1
Perennial vegetation on this site continues to be dominated by grasses. cheatgrass
continues to be a major problem but perennial grasses appear to be maintaining their
hold. The lack of forbs may become an issue. Shrubs appear to be slowly increasing in
density as the site matures. Additional consideration of forb establishment and
cheatgrass control may need to be undertaken in the future.
Haul Road -County Road intersection reeradina
This site was newly reclaimed last year. 2005 was its first growing season. Excellent
seedling establishment was noted. Early in the spring it was noted that the seedlings
showed signs of nutrient stress. Light application of diammonium phosphate alleviated
these symptoms.
Recommendations
The reclaimed areas appear hydrologically stable but species diversity may become an
issue for sites where annual weeds tend to proliferate. Forb establishment currently is the
primary concern with long term establishment. Annual weeds tend to dominate the better
sites only allowing the most aggressive introduced grasses to establish. This domination
of annual weeds, primarily cheatgrass, is reflective of the conditions seen on adjacent
undisturbed lands.
