2005 Revegetation Survey
Introduction
During August visual surveys of the referenced sites were made. Each site was walked to
assess the entire site. Observations were then recorded on an inspection form for future
reference (see Appendix). The intent of the inspections were to:
1. Assess the effectiveness of past revegetation practices.
2. Identify potential problems that exist that may warrant further attention.
3. Provide insight to future revegetation efforts.
4. Provide information needed to develop strategies to correct potential
deficiencies.
East Portal Area
This was the first year of decent moisture since seeding. The majority of the site has
relatively good establishment of perennial species. Due to the harsh aspect of this site
and prior drought conditions succession has been slow and many annual weeds still
persist. Few seedlings were observed along a section of the access road. Supplemental
seeding of this portion of the site may be warranted at a later date. Shrub establishment
appears to be good. Forb establishment appears limited.
Return Shaft Sites/Roads
In general, the reclaimed sites were in good condition. The condition generally reflected
the maturity of the site as well as the quality of the soils at the location. Many shrubs and
forbs were prominent on much of the area. Best forb and shrub establishment occurred
on harsh sites that had little competition from weeds. However, these harsher sites also
produced fewer grasses and less ground cover. Where weed competition was greatest
perennial grass seedlings usually persisted in adequate densities. Due to the longevity of
the disturbance prior to reclamation annual weeds are more of a problem than on short
term disturbances.
