Surface water Site Sw-S2-11. This site was instituted in May, 1987, and monitors Fish
Creek upstream of its confluence of Cow Camp Creek. It is monitored May through September
on a monthly basis and only if either Sites 10 or 12 are flowing. water at this site is a
CaMg-HC03 type (see Table 17, Appendix A). The significantly loner TDS value reported
this year is a result of sampling only in May and June (i-e-, only uh en Sites 10 or 12 are
flowing) when TDS values are low- In prior years, Site 11 was sampled May through
September. This site is upstream of mine discharges; therefore, its water chemistry is
primarily the result of natural or background conditions.
Surface water Site Sw-52-13. This site was instituted in May 1987 and monitors Fish Creek
downstream of its confluence with Bond Creek. It is monitored May through September on a
monthly basis and only if e ither Sites 10 or 12 are flowing- water at [his site is a
CaMg-HC0
type
50 (see Table 17, Appendix A). As with Site 11, the TDS va lue reported on
3
4
Table 20 for this year was significantly lower than that of prior years due to samples
being taken only in May and June. The increases in TDS values from Site 17 to Site 13
(which indicate [he impact from the Seneca 11 Mine discharges) were only 70 mg/l in May
and no increase in June. Thi s data strongly indicates that the discharges of Bond and Cou
Camp Creeks (and, therefore, the discharges of the Seneca fI Mine) have a n insignificant
impact on Fish Cre ek.
To summarize water quality in the Fish Creek basin, it appears that the Seneca II Mine has
little, if any, impact on Fish Creek. water discharged from the mine is lost to stock
ponds, evapotranspiration and the alluvium as it flows Through 7uentymile Park. Dissolved
solids from mine discharges are diluted during the snowmelt runoff in March and April
(prior to the irrigation season) by high stream flows with relatively low TDS
concentrations. The natural conditions in 7uentymile Park appear to have a much greater
impact on the eater quality of Fish Creek, As a final note, it was observed that the
irrigation ditch that diverts eater from Fish Creek just upstream of the confluence of
Bond Creek was observed to be flowing only during the May visit of this year.
Little Grassv Creek Drainaa e. Two monitoring sites lie within the Little Grassy Creek
drainage: Surface eater Site SW-52-5, located in the southwest portion of the permit area
and NPDES Discharge Point 002, also known as the wadge Impoundment.
Surface water Siie Sw-52-5. Surface water Site Sw-52-5 drains the upper reaches of Little
• Grassy Creek which are undisturbed by mining. Review of the hydrograph of monthly flow
S~
15
