The Mine remains in Temporary
Cessation, and no new disturbance, backfilling grading topsoil replacement, or reclamation/seeding was
completed during 2006.
Ongoing site maintenance and monitoring activities continued. During 2006, the frequency of surface and
ground water monitoring was increased to provide for updated hydrologic information, in the event that
Peabody decides to pursue further exploration and feasibility evaluations for the Empire property.
Maintenance activities included inspection and clean-out of drainage structures (as needed), repair of the
water treatment pond embankments, clean-up and removal of miscellaneous equipment and debris (from
abandoned buildings and field storage areas), metal scrap removal by a contractor, demolition of the
Brazel-Simms building, and focused weed- and rodent-control activities.
Rodent control activities focused on follow-up to the 2005 program to address an existing infestation of
ground squirrels in areas to the west, north, and south of the 7-North Angle Dewatering Borehole. The
2005 control efforts were effective in significantly reducing the ground squirrel population, and the 2006
program was designed to further reduce the ground squirrel population to a manageable level. Control
methods included localized application of Prozap (zinc-phosphate oat bait) at the entrances to rodent
burrows and shooting the rodents. A contract was issued for beaver control to remove beavers from a
major irrigation ditch, so that flooded lowlands could be returned to productive use as irrigated hayland.
Beaver control efforts appear to have been effective. Dams and lodges were removed from the irrigation
ditch and adjacent areas, and the irrigation system was restored to usable condition during 2006.
Spot spraying over an area of about 300 acres was conducted for noxious weed infestations in 2006 as a
follow-up to the efforts made in 2005. Spraying was completed by BTU Mine Environmental Staff and
one of the grazing lessees. Targeted weed species included Russian knapweed, leafy spurge,
Houndstongue, hoary cress (white-top), Canadian thistle, and tamarisk. Selective herbicide applications
utilized 2,4-D amine, Banvel, Escort, triclopyr (tamarisk), and Activator 90. Spraying was conducted
from June through October.
