Logan Wash Mine Annual Report
Permit No.: M-1977-424
daylights and discharges into the channel. The 4-inch diameter plastic pipe was buried at a 2 to
5-ft depth, depending on bedrock and grade needed for gravity drainage.
4.5 Other Mine-Water Plumbing
The retort water and L-1 mine water (Outfall 001) valves in the Lower Bench Vault were
plumbed to enable combining the Outfall 001 mine water with retort water that discharges to the
evaporation pond. This was done to accommodate additional flow of water to the pond for use by
Occidental Oil and Gas Company (OOGC) for gas-drilling make-up water. Combined flow was
implemented on June 14`x', and later re-segregated because OOGC decided not to use the pond
water.
4.6 Construction of Soil Barrow Area
TR. No. 7, Soil Amendment Reclamation, was submitted to DMG on August 10`", 2005 and
approved on August 1 1'~', 2005. TR No. 7 described the excavation of the Soil Barrow Area and
application of soil amendments to specific mine areas. The Soil Barrow Area is located in N1/4
NE1/4 NEl/4, 525, T7S, R97W, immediately north of Logan Wash Road in a broad vegetated
drainage or Swale. Approximately 4,400 cubic yards of soil material was excavated and
deposited as a six-inch minimum layer on the "Lower Dump Toe" area, upper portion of the
Lower Access Road, the Upper Bench, Upper Bench Road, and Research Mine Bench.
Construction of the Soil Barrow Area resulted in a new surface disturbance of approximately 0.65
acres that was later revegetated (see above).
4.7 Well Abandonment
Wells LW-108, LW-112, and LW-242 were abandoned during the reporting period. Well LW-
108 is located on the Upper Bench. Well LW-112 is located in Dry Gulch at the OOSI and BLM
property boundary. Well LW-242 is located in Logan Wash, approximately 4.2 miles east of
County Road 45. The Colorado Division of Water Resources approved the abandonment of Well
LW-242 by plugging with bentonite chips instead of tremied cement because the water column
length was relatively short. The table below summarizes well parameters and the abandonment
materials used.
Well Abandonment Information
Total Inside
Date Depth Diameter Depth to Materials
We11ID Abandoned ft in water ft Plu in Material Used
LW-108 1 l/03/05 1,103 6.0 230.3 Neat cement 217 sks, 55
(# 19575) bbls
LW-112 12/08/05 75.25 4.25 66 Bentonite plug; 5 ft 9.5 sks
cement surface lu bentonite
LW-242 12/09/05 177.6 6.0 145.2 Bentonite plug; 6 ft 45 sks
cement surface lu bentonite I
4.8 Remaining Monitoring Wells
Wells not scheduled to be abandoned include Well LW-22, LW-32, LW-45, and LW-] 16. These
wells are to be used by Mr. Ned Prather, a local rancher, for stock-watering purposes. In addition
Well LWCW-lA will remain as adown-gradient compliance monitoring well.
Western Water & Land, Inc. 7
