cover by lifeform are compiled in Table 24. Statistical adequacy of sampling is reviewed in Table
• 25. The list of plant species observed during these studies in reclaimed and reference areas are
present in Appendix 2, Table 26. Seed mixes applied on areas revegetated prior to 1981 and in
years 1981 through 2000 are included in Appendix 3. Photographs of representative samples in
the reclaimed areas sampled in 2003, as well as photographs of the Alkali Sagebrush, Mountain
Brush, and Sagebrush reference areas are included in Appendix 4. Graphic depiction of
vegetation and climate data are presented in Figures 1 through 10 of this report.
In the cover descriptions below, species listed as "also present" were not encountered during
point-intercept sampling but were present within one meter of either side of the 50 m sample
transect line. Cover percentages referred to in the following results as "percent of total vegetation
cover' are relative, all-hit vegetation values. Percentages are rounded to facilitate discussion of
the results of vegetation monitoring in 2003.
1987-1989 Reclaimed Area
(Photographs 1-4)
COVER
(Table 1)
Introduced perennial cool season grasses dominated this area in 2003. Intermediate wheatgrass
(Thinopyrum intermedium) accounted for about 8/10ths of the total 50 percent vegetation cover
for the lifeform. Smooth brome (Bromopsis inermis) contributed over 2/10ths while four other
species made up the remainder. Also dominant were introduced perennial forbs, with 22.2
percent of total vegetation cover. In this lifeform alfalfa occupied nearly 9/10ths of the total while
cicer milkvetch (Astragalus cicer) occupied the rest. Introduced annual and biennial forbs
accounted for 12.4 percent of total vegetation cover, Jim Hill mustard (Sisym6rium altissimum).
composing th'e bulk with close to 9 percent total vegetation cover. Minor contributors were
pennycress (Thlaspi arvense), twolobe speedwell (Pocilla biloba), hound's tongue (Cynoglossum
officinale). Other lifeforms present with less than ten percent total vegetation cover were native
perennial cool season grasses, introduced annual grasses, native perennial forbs, and native
shrubs. Also present, though not quantitatively observed were the native annual and biennial
forbs.
Total vegetation cover was 52 percent, the balance comprised of standing dead (1.11%), litter
(28.67%), bare soil (16.89%), and rock (1.33%). Species density was 18.1 species per 100 sq.m.
•
