GEOTECHNICAL AND DESIGN STUDIES
MOUNT GUNNISON COAL MINE
SOMERSET, COLORADO
FOR MERRICK AND COMPANY
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 GENERAL

1 Pierrick and Company is currently designing surface struc-
tures and facilities related to a proposed ARCO underground
I coal mine located near the town of Somerset, to the south of
the North Fork of the Gunnison River, approximately eight miles
east of Paonia, Colorado.
GEO-HYDRO Consulting, Inc. has been assisting Merrick and
Company in the evaluation of the landslides which have been
' identified on the site of the proposed mine; the landslides will
influence the proposed construction and they have to be taken
into account in the design to avoid the renewal of old defor-
f
h
i
l
mations or t
e tr
ggering o
new s
iding during the construc-
tion or during the life time of the mine.

GEO-HYDRO has been performing the geotechnical studies in
' several phases; a report titled "Progress Report, Landslides
at Mount Gunnison Mine, Somerset, Colorado, for Merrick and
' Company" was submitted on July 19, 1980. The report dealt large-
ly with the delineation of the landslides on the site and with
t the estimation of their character.
I
i
nc
w
,
®o.«,roao conwu
