1

~~

1

Mr. Rich Grossmann
Latimer County Deparhnent of Health
and Environment
June 12, 1995
Page 2
As with dust, noise emission generally occurs from the operation of the processing and
transporting equipment.
2) Take action to reduce the dust and noise pollution
If possible and necessary, Connell will contact the people who have complained to determine the
specific problem.
There aze a number of actions Connell could take to reduce dust and noise pollution. These
actions aze dependent on the source of the pollution. Below we have listed some examples of
courses of action to prevent dust and noise pollution:
If there is a complaint about dust pollution:
1. Connell might have to water roadways.
2. Grade the roadways. A smooth road creates less fire bounce and thus less dust.
3. Reduce driving speed of trucks and equipment.
4. Increase water fed to processing equipment spray bars or repair spray bars.
5. Start new, lower stockpiles. Lower profile stockpiles are not as susceptible to wind
erosion as higher profile stockpiles.
6. Do not add to higher stockpiles during high winds.
7. Install fabric chutes to the ends of conveyor stackers.
9. Reduce the length of free fall for material from end of conveyor stacker to the stockpile.
10. Reduce the amount of equipment in operation until the wind dies down.
If there is a complaint about noise pollution:
I . Connell may have a piece of equipment that is not functioning properly, so they will have
to shut down this equipment until it is fixed.
2. Reduce the number of pieces of equipment in operation.
3. Change the time of operation of equipment to a time when less people can hear it.
As a general note, Connell could install a wind gage or wind sock to monitor the speed and
direction of wind. If the wind speed and dvection reaches a point where area residents might
start complaining, Cormell can take action immediately.
1
