•
J1.0 Introduction
This report is an Addendum to the "1997/98 Landslide Corrective Measures Report", Bart Engineering
Company, September 1998. This addendum, entitled "Appendix J" presents updated information on the
present and furore predicted stability of the landslide at the main facilities of the West Elk Mine as
committed to in Technical Revision No. 84. The current analysis is based upon monitoring of historic and
present conditions at the site, engineering analysis of slope stability, and engineering interpretation of this
data through November 2001. The report will present an updated characterization of the landslide, the
results of stability analyses evaluating the effectiveness of the in-place the corrective measures, and a
summary of monitoring information.
Mountain Coal Company is using the "Observational Approach" [o landslide stabilization, wherein the
implementation of corrective measures is based upon monitoring information and the performance of
in-place corrective measures. Due to the present stability of the landslide, further or ongoing corrective
measures are not planned for the remainder of 2001 or 2002. Future corrective measure plans may be
implemented if monitoring data and field conditions alert that additional stabilization is needed. Potential
additional cortective measures have been discussed in the 1999 Addendum.
Barr Enplneerlnp Company
PCDOCS1230503/CAK
December 15, 2000
Appendix J
2001 Addendum to
1997N9 Landslide Corrective Measures Report
