1990 PROJECT STATIIB AND ANNQAL PLAN OF DEVELOPMENT
1.0 Introduction
This report summarizes the development activities, reclamation
status, wells status and hydrology monitoring results. Proposed
operations for 1991 will be described in this report, as well as
status of all surface facilities and wells not abandoned. Any
technical considerations and/or proposed changes in operations are
presented. Maps and status of cavities and subsidence will be
discussed.
On July 1, 1971 four sodium preference right leases were issued.
During 1980-1982 exploration, well drilling (11 holes) and
• environmental monitoring were conducted on the leased lands. The
~ first phase of development was a bulk sampling operation. This
testing phase was in operation from late 1983 to early 1984. A
second phase of development (for a 3-ton per hour pilot-scale
mine) was presented and approved in 1984. In 1985, revisions to
the approved pilot mining plan (for a 6-ton per hour pilot-scale
mine) were submitted. Exploration wells EX-1 and EX-2 were drilled
in 1985. An environmental assessment was completed by the BLM,
with approval on May 2, 1986. No development was ini tiated under
this plan. The third phase of development, a 125,000 TPY
commer^ial-scale nahcolite mine was evaluated in late 1986 and the
environmental impact statement/record of decision was approved in
November of 1987. Project development in 1988 and 1 989 involved
• drilling exploration well 88-1, and monitoring wells 89-1, 89-2,
1
