MS. Alana Scott
November 7, 1994
Page 2
STEEPEN ROBERTSON AND KIRSTEN
Following inspection of the trenches, the southern half of the azea fn which the crack was observed was
excavated to a depth of approximately 7 ft. Material excavated was stockpiled neazby for reconstructing
the raise.
October 27. 1994
The contractor, SLV, continued to excavate the cracked portion of the raise fill apd completed its
removal. The final excavation comprised removing half of the raise to a depth of approximately 7 ft over
a length of 125 ft and completely removed the observed cracked portions to that depth. The base of the
excavation was compacted by equipment traffic to meet the original fill placement specifications
(minimtun density of 85% of maximum dry density by ASTM D~98). The excavatedlfill material was
replaced fn 1 ft lifts and compacted with equipment traffic. By the end of the shift, SLV has completed
4 lifts of fill replacement with no failing density testing results (see enclosed field density test summary).
October 28. 1994
SLV continued and completed fill replacement with no failing density testing results. A slight deficiency
in fill volume resulted in a localized low spot near the southern end of the repair. Battle Mountain is to
grade this portion of the dam crest to level irregulazities and place material in the low~spot to bring to
grade. This azea will be compacted with equipment traffic to complete the repair work.
Conclusions
The September 1 storm event created localized cracking of t}te embankment raise to a maximum observed
depth of 5 to 6 ft. The azea of cracked fill was completely excavated and recompaded to eliminate any
associated canes of weakness within the fill. With ponding of rainwater on the raise crest now
eliminated, there should be no further problems with the raise.
If you should have any questions or comments regarding this issue, please feel free to give me a call.
Sincerely,
STEEPEN ROBERTSON AND IQRSTEN (U.S.), INC.
DSH:Ip
Enclosure

Colorado P.E. 26076
