As
described in the September 16, 1994 memorandum from Rick Frechette and Dave t~allman, intense
rainfall at the San Luis Project site on the night of September 1, 1994 resulted in a localized crack of the
Phase II Raise 1 embattltment fill. This letter presents the results of activities of October 26 through 28,
1994, associated with repair of the cracked portion of the raise fill.
DAILY ACfIViTIF'S
October 26. 1994
The earthwork contractor, San Luis Valley Earthmoving (SLR, mobilized a CAT 936E front end loader
and a backhoe to the site. Battle Mountain relocated a portion of the tailings pipeline alodg the raise crest
to provide access. A series of three trenches were excavated by backhoe perpendiculad to the trace of
the crack on the raise crest. These trenches were carefully inspected to determine the n9ture and extent
of the cracking at depth.
At the northern end of the cracked portion of the raise, the trench exposed an open crack observed to a
depth of 5 to 6 ft. The crack was very irregulaz with a sepazation which vazied from'k tb 4 inches over
short distances. Individual pieces of gravel were observed to protrude from the face of the crack and had
the appeazance of being washed by water flow. It should be noted that observations recotded during the
September 3 site visit in the September 16 memorandum included descriptions of local erosion which
enhanced the crack width at the northern end.
At the extreme southern end of the crack on the crest of the raise, a trench across the crack expression
revealed a small, 1/16 - I/8 inch. wide, crack to a depth of approximately 3 ft on the squth side of the
trench but no visible crack on the north side of the trench. Another trench was excavated across the
crack approximately 15. ft to the notth. No. signs of cracking were observed in this trench at all, even
though the crack projection was cazefully excavated by hand with a trowel.
Steffen Robertson and Kirsten (U.S.), Inc.
3232 South Vance Street, Lakewood, Colorado 80227, U.S A
Tel.
