Logan Wash Mine Annual Report
Pe-mit No.: M-1877-424
6.1 Mine Maintenance
During the reporting period, GSHI inspected the Logan Wash Mine site on a weekly basis.
Inspection of the mine site was typically restricted to the surface azeas of the mine benches, roads,
and portals. Retort water levels and flow status were periodically checked in the mine.
An underground inspection of the retorts conducted in early July revealed that Retort 8 was not
draining properly and had a head build-up of 8 pounds per square inch (18.4 ft of water). Repair
work to establish normal flow conditions was conducted on July 10`". All repairs were successful
in maintaining drainage from the retorts. Snow removal was periodically performed on the lower
access road to the SRB Cell and on the main access road to provide access for monitoring the
SRB Cell and to retrieve equipment stored in the mine.
6.2 Pond 1 Maintenance
Maintenance of Pond 1 included weekly inspection of (1) drainage rates to the pond from the
mine retorts, (2) the leak detection vault, and (3) security fence and general conditions of the liner
and pond. The leak detection vault was dry during the reporting period. No other maintenance or
repairs were performed at the pond.
GSHI periodically uses an enhanced evaporation system at the pond consisting of a gasoline
motor, pump, headers, and 8 sprayers. The system was not operated during 2002 because of
normal to below normal flows into the pond.
7.0 Anticipated Reclamation in the Year 2003
The 0. ] 4 acres that were disturbed in 2000 has revegetated naturally, and the area will be
monitored for future reclamation needs. This disturbance was associated with repair activities on
the retort discharge pipeline near the evaporation pond.
GSHI is in the process of reviewing reclamation specifications for the Logan Wash Mine and is
planning on initiating reclamation activities during the summer of 2003. GSHI anticipates that a
decision on water managemenUtreatment at the mine will be made in early summer 2003. Once
the preferred alternative for managing/treating mine drainage water has been identified, GSHI
will implement the alternative.
A number of reclamation activities that are not dependent on water treatment alternatives include:
• Removal and sealing of the air vent,
• Abandonment of existing wells (other than LWCW-1 A),
• Removal of fencing on previously reclaimed azeas (spurs along main Logan Wash Access
Road),
• Establishment of vegetated "islands" on waste piles (mine dumps),
• Repair of underground mine workings and follow-up construction of permanent retort,
drainage lines within the mine,
• Reclamation of all roads not needed for monitoring access and,
• Potential sealing of the Research Mine Portal.
Western Water 8 Land, Inc.
DMGLWann103.doc
3/6/2003
4of5
