1
' September 28, 1998
taken to interpret their results shall not constitute grounds for a claim by the Contractor for
additional compensation or an extension of time.
The Engineer will collect samples of fill materials and perform particle size analysis and
moisture contents as well as nuclear densometer tests on the compacted fill to determine
' conformance of the in-place fill to specified requirements.
Tests will be performed in accordance with the principles and methods prescribed by the
American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and other such recognized authorities.
A. Inspection Requirements
' Inspection of the earthworks will involve on-the-spot examination of all materials
being used for construction to ensure compliance with the material requirements,
moisture condition, spreading procedures, layer thickness and compaction
requirements. General inspection will be a necessary addition to routine testing
taking place.
' B. Test Requirements
To ensure that satisfactory quality control is maintained and design objectives are
achieved, specific testing requirements will be implemented for all materials placed
within the embankment for the tailings storage facility expansion.
' Tests on material before it is compacted will be used to determine whether the
materials comply with the specifications prior to placement in the fill zone. During
placement and after completion of the Work, tests will be carried out to determine
' the results achieved and ensure the minimum required densities have been met.
Tests will be carried out on all materials used in the Work as and when required and
shall include the following:
' (1) Tests on Fill Material Prior to Compaction
• Particle size distribution. Samples for these tests shall be obtained
from the material source and "grab" samples of material after placing
and spreading.
' Laboratory Proctor compaction tests on the material placed in the fill
requiring field density tests. Samples for these tests shall be
obtained form stockpiles and grab samples from in-place material.
(2) Tests on Fill After Compaction
• Moisture content of fill materials after placing and compaction.
' Earthwork
' J'\5461\SPECSFNL.WPD 2200-11
