Construction Rate
Construction of the embankment over the tailings surface may induce a state of
total stress within the tailings deposit resulting in a loss of strength. To prevent this
situation, the construction of the upstream embankment shall be paced to take not
less than one week. The controlled construction rate will allow excess pore
pressures developed during construction to dissipate.
Installation of standpipe piezometers will be under the direction of the engineer.
C. GCL/Geomembrane Anchor Trench Backfill
Material will be placed in the anchor trenches by the Contractor only after the
Engineer has granted approval that the geosynthetics have been properly placed
and tested in accordance with the specifications.
Backfill shall be carefully placed and spread in thin layers which shall not exceed
' 12-inches in thickness after mechanical compaction. Compaction shall be the
density of the surrounding material or as required by the Engineer.
' D. Construction Tolerances
The Contractor shall construct the embankment to the lines and grades shown on
' the Drawings, or as required by the Engineer, within the following tolerances:
The maximum permissible horizontal and vertical deviation of the
boundaries between the zones of the embankment from the lines and
' grades shown on the Drawings or as required by the Engineer shall be one
(1) foot.
• The finished upstream face of the embankment shall not deviate from the
line and grade shown on the Drawings, or as required by the Engineer, by
more than one (1) foot measured normal to the face and, in addition, shall
not be uniformly lower than the required line and grade.
• The line and grade of the finished downstream face of the embankment
' shall not deviate from that shown on the Drawing or required by the
Engineer by more than one(1) foot measured normal to the face and, in
addition, shall not be uniformly lower than the required line or grade.
' The elevation and width of the embankment crest shall not be less than the
dimensions shown on the Drawings or required by the Engineer.
' Earthwork
J:\5461\SPECSFNL.WPD 02200-9
