1
September 28, 1998
A. Use crushed or screened, angular gravel ('/~' to 2%") for erosion control on slopes
steeper than 3:1.
1 B. Alternatively, erosion control materials for use on slopes steeper than 3:1 may be
biodegradable mats or fabrics (coconut or straw fiber) appropriately anchored into
' the cover soils. A small grain straw mulch with surface binder (tackifier) may be
used on closure slopes of 3:1 or flatter.
' C. Erosion control materials for use on slopes steeper than 2:1, or for use in drainage
channels, shall be a 3-D matting consisting of UV-stabilized geosynthetic fibers and
filaments installed as aturf-reinforcement mat (TRM), TRM 1060 as manufactured
' by Synthetic Industries, or Enkamat 7010 as manufactured by Akzo Industrial
Systems, Inc., or approved equal.
' PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 SITE PREPARATION
t A. The surface of the existing embankment will be scarified, moisture conditioned and
compacted to the satisfaction of the engineer prior to fill placement. The top foot
of the existing embankment soil maybe removed if requested by the engineer. The
' engineer will also evaluate any fill placed on the top of the existing embankment
prior to the commencement of construction to determine its suitability as fill material
and to determine any additional work required to prepare said fill. Any material
' removed during the site preparation will be stockpiled or wasted as directed by the
Owner.
' B. Prior to placing any embankment fill material, foundation areas will be prepared by
removal of any topsoil and vegetation and any loose or deleterious material. Soil
surfaces within the foundation area will be scarified to a depth of one foot, moisture
conditioned and re-compacted to a minimum density of 90 percent of Modified
' Proctor density as determined by ASTM D1557. The prepared foundation surfaces
shall be inspected and approved by the Engineer. The Engineer will make every
endeavor to approve all foundation surfaces, which will accept embankment fill, in
' a timely manner in order to preserve these surfaces and to insure continuity during
construction operations.
t C. Any damage resulting from the Contractor's operations during the site preparation
or excavation shall be repaired at the expense of the Contractor and to the
satisfaction of the Engineer.
' 3.2 EXCAVATION
' A. Contractor shall conduct excavation operations in a manner thatwill allow continued
free drainage of the excavation and the immediately surrounding areas, to the
extent possible. Excessive water shall not be permitted to accumulate in
' Earthwork
' J.~546115PECSFNL.WPD 02200-6
