.y- . .
INTERNAL MEMO
to: Dan Mathews 6 May 6, 1999
from: Jim Bume
subj: Deserado 97 AHR
I have completed a review of the 1997 AHR for the Deserado Mine. As usual, it is pretty straight-
forwazd. I do have a couple comments, though.
You did a great job of summarizing and of picking out inconsistencies in the monitoring. I will say no
more about that except that I agree completely about the discrepancy noted regarding the number of
wells and well sites sampled. It may be time to request a brief overview in the introduction of each
AHR summarizing the sampling program and the wells. It is real confusing when you haven't looked at
it for nearly 2 years. I never could locate a wellsite in section 21 which, by their numbering system,
should be locatable, unless [ am misunderstanding that system.
Appazently an issue outstanding from last yeaz was whether water level measurements for wells 31-7M
and 33-8M were incorrect ("erroneous" as stated in the report) for the month of September, 1997. Well
31-7M was at 109 feet bgs for the entire year of 1997, only 1 foot difference between those
measurements and others typical both before and afrer. That just doesn't seem significant to me.
Well 33-8M dropped 12 feet (from -225 feet bgs to -237 feet bgs) between May and September 1997,
but the water level has continued to drop slightly in 1998. 1 agree with the author that there is no
obvious reason for this, but I also don't think it was a bad measurement in 1997. Clearly the water level
has dropped and has stayed steady since.
Well 30-8M dropped to its previous level. After a year at <60 feet bgs, it is back to >100 feet bgs.
There aze no unusual or disturbing trends to note during the year and the hydrologic system is evolving
as predicted in the PHC.
