- 5 -
the loadout facilities. We understand that considerable site grading
1 will be required in this area due to realignment of the river diannel
and new highway construction.
SITE CONDITIIXIS
' The site is located within the valley bottom and southern valley
side of the North Fork Gunnison River immediately east of the town of
Somerset. The present entrance to the site is across the existing
bridge to the Bear Mine facilities located at the northwest corner of
the development. The majority of proposed facilities will be located
either on the nearly flat to y~ntly sloping valley bottan along the
river or on a higher gently sloping plateau. Separating these two
' areas is a very steep brush-covered slope apparently forn~ed fran a
' resistent sandstone layer. This massive layer is exposed near the
Bear Mine. Directly to the south, within the portal area, the ground
' surface steepens. A known landslide described by others (IECb
December 1976) is located in this area. We understand that Geo Hydro
1 Consulting is currently investigating the feasibility of the portal
and roadway construction across this area. The general topography of
the site with respect to the various proposed and existing facilities
is shown on Figs. 2 and ?A.
Vegetation and ground rover varies considerably from low grasses
and weeds within portions of the valley bottan to dense scrub oak in
the higher plateau areas. Considerable clearing and grading of the
' higher plateau area was required for drill rig access. Near the
existing Bear Mine, the ground surface is generally devoid of

1
