-26-
' 1. The existing ground surf:.ice should be cleared of all vegeta-
tion, topsoil and any loose soil or uncompacted fill. In
' - sloping areas steeper than 5:1 (horizontal to vertical) the
ground surface should be benched to provided a level surface
'
for fill placement.
' 2. In cut areas, the exposed subgrade should be scarified
6 inches, moistened to near optimum and compacted. Required
fill should then be placed in horizontal lifts and compacted.
Degree of compaction and fill material type will depend pri-
' floors and
maril
on the intended
ad use
Beneath buildin
p
g
y
.
' pavement areas, we recommerd a minimum compaction of 958 of
standard Proctor density (ASTM D-698). On-site clays free of
vegetation, debris and oversized rods can be used beneath
pavement and miscellaneous fill areas. Non-expansive mster-
' ials similar to granular soils encountered in the lower area
of the site along the river should be used beneath building
areas
.
' 3. Pads constructed for future building sites should be graded
with adequate slope to prevent ponding.
COI~ACTION AMID SBRINRAGE FACTORS
Subgrade soils in the lower area adjacent to the river are gener-
' ally loose to medium dense, whereas the clays in the higher plateau
area are stiff to very stiff. elevation loss due to scarifying and
' compacting the subgrade soils is estimated to be on the order of 1 to
2 inches. This loss will be generally negligible compared to the 1 to

1
