•
•
•
revegetation within this azea took place in 1987. Replaced soils were generally sandy in
texture.
The west pazcel of the 1987 reclamation area was dominated by Calamovilja longijolia
and Andropogon hallii. Bromus marginatus was the subdominant species. Agropyron
cristatum and Eriogonum ejjussum were both commonly found. Helianthus annuus,
Erigeron bellidiastrum (daisy), Ambrosia psilos[achya, Opuntia polyacan[ha, and Yucca
glauca were encountered. Artemisia frlijolia has become well established from upwind
sources.
In the 1987 reclamation area east pazcel, Calamovilfa longijolia is the visually dominant
species with Andropogon hallii, Bromus marginatus, and Agropyron dasystachyum as
significant contributors. Bouteloua gracilis and Schizachyrium scoparium aze widely
scattered. The forbs Helianthus annuus and Ambrosia psilostachya aze common.
Artemisia frlijolia is scattered throughout the pazcel.
Total vegetation cover in the 1987 reclamation azea was estimated at 55 percent. Overall
herbaceous production in this area was estimated [o be 130 g/mZ (1160 Ib/ac). No
evidence of pests or diseases was identified in this azea.
COMPARISON OF RECLAIMED AND REFERENCE AREAS
Monitoring of the revegetated azeas allows for the identification of vegetation community
development trends during the extended liability period. This evaluation also assists in
decisions regarding yeazly grazing, husbandry practices, interseeding, fertilizing, and weed
management. Comparison of the reclaimed area values for vegetation cover, herbaceous
production, and species composition with the values from the reference area or standard,
indicates whether revegetation has been successful, or whether additional measures need
to be initiated to enhance vegetation community development. The tables below allow the
comparison of the parameter values with the standard to be achieved, either from the
reference area in the case of vegetation cover and herbaceous production, or the
established standard for species composition.
Total Vegetation Cover (1999)
Reference Area
^bar 50.20
S 6.43
n 10
Nmio 6
1995 Rem Areas 1997 Rec.
