1986 RECLAMATION AREA
The 1986 reclamation area encompasses approximately 47 acres of recla'uned pit in the
central azea of the Keenesburg Mine permit area. The 1986 reclamation area is composed
of three parcels (west, central, and east) separated by north-south haul road corridors.
This azea is nearly flat with a gentle slope (<1°) to the north and east. Reclamation and
coincident revegetation within this area took place in 1986. Replaced soils were sandy in
texture.
Andropogon hallii and Calamovi/fa longifo(ia dominated the west parcel in this area.
Bromus marginalus was a subdominant. Additional graminoid contributors observed
included Agropyron cristatum and Agropyron dasystachyum. Forbs were present in
significant numbers, with Helianthus annuus, Ambrosia psilostachya, Argemone
polyacantha (prickly poppy), and Nuttallia nuda (shooting star) observed. Widely
scattered individuals of Opuntia polyacantha and Yucca glauca were encountered.
The central parcel of the 1986 reclamation area was visually dominated by Calamovilja
longifolia, Andropogon hallii and Bromus marginalus. Agropyron dasystachyum was
common and clumps of Bouteloua gracilis and Schizachyrium scoparium (little bluestem)
were noted. Common forbs included Helianthus annuus, Ambrosia psilostachya,
Argemone polyacantha, Thelesperma spp. (thelesperma), Eriogonum effussum
(buckwheat), and a few individuals of Nuttallia nuda, Heterotheca villosa (daisy), and
• Physalis pumila (ground cherry). Several mature patches of Yucca glauca were
encountered.
The east parcel of the 1986 reclamation area has two distinct vegetation types. The
topographically elevated area at the north end of the parcel is dominated by Calamovilfa
longifolia, Andropogon hallii and Schizachyrium scoparium. Ambrosia psilostachya and
Eriogonum effussum are the dominant forbs. In the lower azea, at the south end of this
parcel, Calamovilfa longifolia is dominant and Bromus marginalus is subdominant, with
contributions by Andropogon hallii and Agropyron cristatum. Forbs were fewer and
more widely scattered in the lower azea, but included Ambrosia psilostachya, Argemone
polyacantha, and Physalis pumila.
Overall vegetation cover in the 1986 reclamation area was estimated at 50 to 60 percent.
Total herbaceous production was estimated at 150 g/m2 (1340 Ib/ac). No evidence of
pests or diseases was identified in any of the 1986 reclamation area parcels.
1987 RECLAMATION AREA
The 1987 reclamation area encompasses approximately 48 acres of reclaimed pit and
adjacent areas in the south central area of the Keenesburg Mine permit azea. The largest
segment of the 1987 reclamation azea is composed of two parcels (west and east)
separated by a north-south haul road corridor. The entire 1987 reclamation azea is nearly
Flat with a gentle slope (<I°) to the south and east. Reclamation and subsequent
-13-
