But during initial <br />mining we stockpile the sand within the lake areas of the pit <br />for later use. This excess sand was pumped into the nor- <br />theast corner and the east central part of Stage I and the <br />west central side of Stage III. This reduced the .Lake area <br />in Stage I temporarily. We graded and <br />shaped 1.43 acres ± in Stage III this year. The backfill <br />area in the northeast corner of Stage I is complete. Since <br />1980, 98 cottonwoods; 3 cedar; 61 black walnuts; 52 russian <br />olives; 32 pine and 148 wild plums have been planted in <br />Stages I and IV. Survival rate as been nearly 70~, and the <br />trees along the west and south sides of Stage IV are now <br />self sustaining. We have had to fence in all of t)ie larger <br />trees that existed on the site and a number of thE~ smaller <br />ones along the Lowline Ditch to keep the beavers from <br />cutting them down. We have continued to monitor their <br />progress and care for them as needed. The tree aireas are <br />colored green. <br />
