Dept. of Natural Resource
Mining and reclamation are proceeding on schedule in accordance
with the mining and reclamation plans and timetables in the
amended application submitted in 1981.
Reference is made to MLRB Rules and Regulations, Section 2.40:
2.41(1)(a) Mining continued in amended Stage 1 on 8.54f acres
(see attached map). Mining in this area will not be
complete at the end of the reporting year. In addi-
tion to the mining in amended Stage 1, approximately
0.19f acres in Stage B was mined, and mining continues
on the 3.Ot acres in Stage D initially disturbed last
year.
(b) Stripping continues ahead of mining in Stage 1. At
this time, approximately 7.821 acres are stripped;
an additional 1.91f acres are cleared of all trees.
(2)Backfilling continues in Stage Y. We have started shaping
the river banks above the waterline in Stage Z. No reclama-
tion is scheduled at this time on any other stages.
(3)Backfill on 15f acres in Stage Y; shaping on 5t acres in
Stage Z.
(4)No planting was scheduled for this year.
(5)No fertilizing was scheduled for this year.
(6)It now appears that revegetation efforts in Stage X are largely
unsuccessful. Aprroximately 6.451 acres are scheduled for
revegetation, but to date all efforts have shown dismal
results. We are not sure why results have been so minimal.
Soil testing has not indicated a reason for the poor results.
Reexamination of the seed mix, seeding procedures and other
factors likewise have suggested no reason for the results
obtained. The SCS suggested the original mix, but they are
unable to explain the failure.Local ranchers and farmers
are no more successful than we in making this desert bloom.
