Yoast Mine 2002 Annual Reclamation Report
2002 Disturbance Area
The Yoas[ Mine 2002 Reclamation Map shows the limits of disturbance as of December 31, 2002. The
disturbance line as shown on this drawing depicts all disturbance associated with the mining operation
including haul road and pond construction, topsoil removal and storage, open pits, spoil piles, etc. The area
disturbed during 2002 totals 60.0 acres.
Backlilline and Gradine
During 2002, SCC graded a portion of the active pi[ spoil. This area totals 33.5 acres and is shown on the
Yoast Mine 2002 Reclamation Map.
.) Soil and Spoil Monitorine
SCC is required by Permit C-94-082 to monitor the salvage, storage, and redistribution of soil and spoil
handling operations at Yoas[ Mine. Specific programs include documenting soil recovery, verifying soil
redistribution thickness, determining final graded spoil quality, determining soil fertility, evaluating plant
rooting characteristics, recording the source of replaced soil, and completing an annual soil balance. The
following sections present the soil and spoil monitoring data for [he 2002 calendar year.
Soil Recovery Documentation
Soil recovery was documented by daily observation by the grading foreman and pit supervisor. This quality
control information is used to verify soil salvage estimates predicted from the baseline soil survey, confirm
soil map unit types, justify salvage thickness, and evaluate soil suitability. Soil salvage occurred in advance
of the active pi[ during the 2002 field season as shown on the Yoast Mine 2002 Reclamation Map. All
topsoil salvaged during this period was placed in stockpiles M, O, P, Q and R (see Table 00.1).
SCC will continue [o closely monior soil-handling operations during [he 2002 field season. Only suitable
sources of soil within the disturbance area will be salvaged [o ensure the reclaimed areas are restored to [he
• desired posttnine land uses. SCC will obtain variances pursuant [o Rule 4.06.2(2) and Perini[ C-94-OR2
whenever suitable soil cannot be salvaged exclusively from any map unit because of equipment limitations or
operator safety concerns.
2
