several miles south of the project area. The following
discussion draws heavily on that review.
Prehistoric occupations of the southeastern Colorado Plains
are traditionally classiFied into one of Eour different stages.
Those stages and their temporal spans and subdivisions are
described briefly below.
Pre-Palen-Indian Stage: prior t^ 12,000 B.P.(before present),
010,000 B.C.). Also known as the Pre-Pco~ectile Point Stage,
this stage is not universally accepted. Evidence From eastern
Colorado consists primarily of Pleistocene Faunal remains in
association with possible bone tools and Flakes. No projectile
points or other stone tools have been recovered in direct
association.
Palen-Indian Stage: 12,000 t^ 7500 B.P. 010,000 to 5500
B.C.). This stage encompasses the earliest well-accepted
evidence For the human occupation of the region. Palen-Indians
ace believed to have been primarily big-game hunters, although
there is increasing recognition that a mixed hunting-gathering
subsistence pattern was Followed. This stage coincides with the
end of the Pleistocene climatic episode and the subsequent
Plesitocene-Holocene transition. The stage is generally divided
into three cultural/temporal periods.
- Clovis Period: ca. 11,500 t^ 11,000 B. P.(95OO to 9000
B.C.). This period is distinguished by distinctive Fluted and
non-Fluted lanceolate projectile points and the remains of
butchered mammoth and other Late Pleistocene fauna.
- Folsom Period: ca. 10,800 to 10,200 B.P.CBBOO to 8000
B.C.). Folsom period sites are distinguished by deeply fluted
4
