No surveys have been conducted and n^ <br />cultural resources have been previously recorded in the pro,]ect <br />area, The field investigation was conducted on January S, 199'1. <br />Field crew consisted of one archaeologist, the principal <br />investigator. N^ cultural resources were located in the pro)ect <br />area. All pco~ect records are retained in the Eiles of the <br />principal investigator. <br />Environmental Data <br />------------------ <br />The project area lies in the Colorado Piedmont in the Denver <br />Basin in an area of sedimentary rocks ^E quaternary and Iertiary <br />age. Monument Creek is the primary drainage in the area, Flowing <br />southward to loin with Fcuntain Creek at Colorado Springs and <br />eventually emptying into the Arkansas River (Chronic 1980:20,33). <br />The terrain in the protect area is very uneven, consisting <br />mainly of ridges with steep slopes, except Eor the level area <br />where previous mining has taken place. IdentiFiable sails in the <br />project area are: the Jarre-Tecolote complex, which consists of <br />deep, well-drained ,gravelly and sandy soils derived From sandy <br />alluvia and alluvial fan sediments; and the Peyton-Pring complex, <br />which consists of well-drained sandy looms. These soils support <br />a variety of native grasses along with yucca, Gambel oak, and <br />mountain mahogany. Average annual precipitation in the area is <br />2 <br />
