The mayor <br />trails carrying overland emigrants tc Utah, California and Oregon <br />for the most part by-passed the region. One alternate route, the <br />Cherokee Trail, did travel up the Arkansas River and then up <br />Fountain Creek and beyond to loin with trails on the South Platte <br />River. Farming began in the Fountain Creek valley in the 1860s, <br />and the city ^E Fountain was established in 1870 CMcThighe <br />198't:92; Larson 1981: 2). In the immediate area, Colorado City <br />Clater t^ be part of Colorado Springs) was established in 1655, <br />and the town of Monument was platted in 187'1 by the Denver and <br />Rio Grande Railroad CMcThighe 198'1) <br />Settlement Period: ca. 1850 to Present. By the 1860s <br />ranches were scattered throughout the area, and some of the <br />cattle trails From Texas prahably used Fountain Creek valley as <br />an alternate route. Irregular stage service between ^enver and <br />Santa Fe was apparently established in 1660, with a route <br />following Fountain Creek.
