Production (Table 2)
• Herbaceous production for alfalfa averaged 28.6 pounds per acre. Herbaceous
production for all other species averaged 1,040.3 pounds per acre. Total herbaceous
production averaged 1,068.8 pounds per acre.
Woody Plant Density (Table 3)
Total woody plant density averaged 110 individuals per acre. Big sagebrush accounted
for more than one half of this total. Silver sagebrush (Seriphidium canum) and mountain
snowberry (Symphoricarpos rotundifolius) each contributed more than one-fifth of the
total. Saskatoon serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia) provided the balance.
1998 Reclaimed Area
(Photographs 5-8))
Cover (Table 4)
Introduced annual and biennial forbs averaged 68.8 percent of total vegetation cover for
this area. Twolobe speedwell and Russian thistle (Salsola australis) each contributed
approximately one-third of this lifeform's total. Pennycress (Thlaspi arvense) averaged
one-tenth of this total. Minor contributors were burning-brush (Bessie sieversiana), leafy
goosefoot (Chenopodium foliosum), oakleaf goosefoot (Chenopodium glaucum), bull
thistle (Cirsium vulgare), hound's tongue (Cynoglossum officinale), prickly lettuce
(Lactuca serriola), yellow sweetclover, devil's shoestrings (Polygonum arenastrum), Jim
Hill mustard (Sisymbrium alfissimum), and salsify (Tragopogon dubius ssp. major).
Native perennial cool season grasses comprised 15.6 of the total vegetation cover.
• Slender wheatgrass (Elymus trachycaulus) contributed more than two-fifths of this
lifeform's total and mountain brome (Ceratochloa carinata) averaged nearly three-tenths.
Minor contributors were Nelson needlegrass (Achnaiherum nelsoniQ, thickspike
wheatgrass (Elymus lanceolatus fm. dasystachya), green needlegrass (Nassella
viridula), western wheatgrass, and three bluegrasses: Agassiz (Poa agassizensis),
Canada (Poa compressa), and Sandberg (Poa secunda). Native annual and biennial
forbs averaged 6.1 percent of the total vegetation cover. Douglas knotweed (Polygonum
douglasi~) accounted for nearly 95 percent of this lifeform. Minor contributors were .
Fremont goosefoot (Chenopodium fremontir) and gumweed (Grindelia squarrosa).
Introduced annual grasses accounted for 4.8 percent of the total vegetation cover. Two-
thirds was contributed by cheatgrass (Anisantha tectorum), and the remaining third by
Japanese brome (Bromus japonicus). Introduced perennial cool season grasses
averaged 2.4 percent of total vegetation cover. Two-fifths of this was contributed by
smooth brome, and the rest by orchard grass (Dactylis glomerate) and intermediate
wheatgrass. Native perennial forbs averaged 1.9 percent of total vegetation cover.
While eighteen species were found in this area, only three contributed measurably to the
total. They were blue flax (Adenolium lewisii), Rocky Mountain penstemon (Penstemon
strictus), and American vetch (Vicia americans). Introduced perennial forbs comprised
0.3 percent of the total vegetation cover. Alfalfa and tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) each
contributed half of this lifeform's total. Native shrubs were found in this area, but did not
contribute to the total.
Total vegetation cover was 36.8 percent. Standing dead, litter, bare soil, and rock cover
values were 0.30, 13.64, 40.67, and 8.61 percent respectively. Species density
• averaged 25.1 species per 100 sq. m.
