Cut 5 Limestone for the plant is still be-& mined from
this cut . Current market conditions require cement
blended with the limestone from Cut # 6 . A sandstone
quarry has been established near the south central
area .
Cut 6 Mining of the gray shale segment of the Smokey Hill
formation is approximately 25% complete . Mining of
limestone in this cut commenced on May 25 , 1988 .
2 . Location and number of Acres Reclaimed During the Year.
Reclamation work is being done in several areas , but no
additional acreage has been completely restored .
3 . Location and Number of Acres in Various Stages of Reclamation.
The nine acres of dump sites on which sewer sludge has been
applied appear to have stronger and possibly more vegetation
than unfertilized areas . The vegetation on the 51 acres of
old dump is improving . This category has not changed
appreciably since 1987 .
4 . Species of Vegetation Planted . the Location and Dates of
Planting
Thirty Pinion trees (approximately 12" seedlings) were
planted on August 26 , 1988 near the quarry office as a test
to gather information on labor required, planting technique
and plant survival . No new grass seeding was done in the past
year. The following mixture of seed has been requisitioned
for planting in November or December .
Side oats grama Vaughn variety
Indian Rice grass Paloma Variety
Blue grama
Western Wheat grass
Alfalfa Laydac variety
Fourwing Saltbush
5 . Type and Approximate Quantity of Fertilizers, Organic
Material, or Soil Conditioners Used and Location of Use
Organic material in the form of sewer sludge has been
applied at the rate of 5000 pounds per acre
to the southern portion of Cut # 1 and the Eastern portion of
Cut # 2 .
6 . Appraisal of Results of Reclamation Efforts .
The grasses continue to develop and spread in all areas .
Since efforts to transplant large trees have failed due to
the age and size of trees , also the planting technique using
earthen enclosures to hold water may have created to much
moisture over extended periods . Experiments with seedlings
will be conducted.
7 . Estimates and Location and Number of Acres to be Affected in
the Coming Year
No new disturbance is anticipated for the 1988-1989 year.
