Magnesium
Magnesium concentration levels in all groundwater monitoring wells generally remained
within historic values during this water year. Well 17-B shows the least overall variability
for magnesium values of the wells, ranging from 5.7 to 19.0 mg/L over the past nine yeazs.
This water year magnesium values at well 17-B increased from the lowest concentration at
the end of water year 2004 but remained within the historic range. Magnesium values for
well 95-1 this year were below those for well 17-B, continuing a decrease from highs at
the end of water year 2002. Both wells 17-B and 95-1 showed a decrease in
concentrations over this water year.
Manganese
Manganese concentrations in all wells over the period of record remain low, though well
95-1 values fluctuate more than well 17-B. As with magnesium concentrations, the
October 2003 value for well 95-1 revealed an unexplained spike, followed by a return to
historic levels two months later, suggesting an aberrant value.
Sodium
With the exception of a spike during the October 2003 sampling at well 17-B, sodium
concentrations within wells remained very consistent and within historic ranges this water
year.
Sulfate
Sulfate concentrations vary widely within and between the wells. Well 17-B has had
consistently low sulfate levels throughout the past ten water years. Well 95-1 illustrated
wide initial fluctuations in sulfate concentrations (W.Y. 1997-1998) with subsequent water
years revealing no detectable sulfate concentrations.
Trace Elements
Many of the trace elements found to be below the detection limits for the springs sampled
were also found to be below detection limits for the wells sampled. These trace elements
are arsenic, cadmium, carbonate, mercury, nitrite, nitrate, nitrate/nitrite, total phosphate,
selenium, and zinc. Other trace elements found at detectable limits are consistent within
each well at levels that do not indicate high or low fluctuations of these elements. Overall,
elements that are detectable and those that aze not have been consistent throughout the
groundwater well monitoring program at the Cazbon Junction Mine.

Carbon JwatiMl Mire Page 1Y
Annual Hydrologic Report for Water Year 2005
