of 2000 to 8.3 mg/L during the first calendar quarter of 2001. The ammonia
concentrations for well 95-1 returned to lower levels in water year 2003 and remained low
this year.
Bicarbonate
Bicarbonate concentrations at well 17-B remained within its historic range this water yeaz.
In water yeaz 2004 well 17-B exhibited an initial rise, followed by a drop in concentration
during the late winter, followed by a rise through the summer. This appears to be a
consistent trend for this well, and the April 2005 concentration was consistent with the
spring concentration from past years. Bicarbonate concentrations at we1195-1 decreased
over this water year and reached aten-yeaz low during the third calendar quarter of water
yeaz 2004. This spring the bicazbonate concentration increased slightly.
Calcium
Well 17-B exhibited a significant increase in concentration to 20.7 mg/L this water year.
Well 95-1 showed wide fluctuations in calcium concentrations during water years 1997
and 1998, with generally consistent concentrations since. The first sampling during
October 2003 revealed a "spike" in calcium concentrations that did not persist through to
the December 2003 sampling. This may have been an artefact of sampling or a widely
spaced spike, not unlike that during the third calendaz quarter of 1997. This water yeaz
we1195-1 concentrations continued to decrease.
Chloride
Chloride concentrations in wells 17-B have remained low for the past five water years,
neaz or below detectable limits. Chloride concentrations were elevated in well 95-1 during
water years 1999 and 2000. During the last three water yeazs chloride concentrations
have decreased, though concentrations in well 95-1 slightly above 1997-19981evels.
Iron
Iron concentrations were elevated during the fourth calendaz quarter of 2000 and second
calendar quarter of 2002, significantly so for wells 17-B and 95-1. During the later half of
water yeaz 2002, all wells revealed reduced iron concentrations, leading to the conclusion
that the above values for wells I7-B and 95-1 were aberrant concentrations. Tlris water
yeaz, iron concentrations in all wells were consistently low.
r1
LJ
Carbon Junction Mine Page 10
Annual Hydrologic Report for Water Year 2006
