ion calcium-sulfate/bicarbonate type. Chemical parameters were relatively stable over the year with greater
ionization as water levels were lower.
Some of the parameters such as iron and ammonia exhibited high concentrations during certain sampling
events. Reasons for these spikes are not known, however, they may be linked to well completion and the steel
casing.
Station W-16 is located in the cast pit reclaimed area. Water levels remained relatively stable over the
1989 monitoring period ranging from 92.92 in March to 93.83 in December. Water levels decreased during
the four 1989 samplings. Over the five year monitoring period water levels have generally increased, which
indicates the development of the aquifer in the reclaimed area. The water is a sodium-sulfate type with higher
conductivity and TDS over that observed in other wells. The water also exhibits an elevated level of iron and
manganese.
Concern has been expressed by CMLRD that as an aquifer develops in the reclaimed area, springs and
seeps may occur into surface waters of Stollsteimer Creek During April of 1987 and 1988,a spring and seep
survey was conducted in the reclaimed area. No springs or seeps were located in either survey. A spring and
seep survey was conducted on March 27, 1989, in the area of the mine pits and surface disturbance area. One
spring was observed originating from the Stollsteimer Creek bank just downstream from surface station S-2.
Flow was measured at approximately 3 gallons per minute. Water chemistry of the spring was analyzed
(Appendix 2) and found to be between that sampled in Stollstcimer Creek station S-2 and Well A-1. This
survey will be conducted again in 1990 to assess the development and interface of this aquifer.
1
I
I
I
i
I
