Additional Sheets
2002 Annual Report
Coal Creek Resources
M-1988-044
Schmidt Construction Company
Anniversary Date: March 28
Overview of Permit Year: During the 2001/2002 operating year all of the mining activity occurred in the
Upland Mining area and in the southern portions of the South Lowland Mining area. Shortly after the 2001
annual report was submitted, a portion of the permit that overlapped another permit held by another parry
was removed from the permit. Late in the year an inspection resulted in a complete inventory of disrurbances
on the site and also required, after further analysis by the Division, an amendment to primarily add a defined
affected land boundary and adjust the affected land disturbed at any one time and the bond.
Annual Report Maps: As was done in previous yeazs, there aze three annual report maps included in this
report. Map 1 provides the information for the South Lowland area which is basically a stream bed operation.
The most southerly portion of the site is where most of the mining activity occurred. The azea reported in
last yeaz's annual report as being mined has now been placed in reclamation status.
Map 2a shows the entire affected land azea in the Upland Mining Area. However, the main part of the
upland operation should be examined only with reference to Map 2b which shows the area of affected land in
enlarged detail.
These three maps contain the results of the inventory of disturbances which was performed at the
request of the Division. Because this inventory was performed using a more accurate procedure than was
previously done, a few of the acreages previously identified have changed somewhat. The amount of affected
land has actually decreased slightly from that shown on previous maps. A few areas that were assumed to be
affected and were shown as such on previous maps were not included the inventory because there was no
evidence the land had been disturbed by mining activities. This primarily includes process sites in the South
Lowland area that were previously thought to have been used, but were not fully used.
The boundaries of affected land shown on the maps contained in this report include all lands that
were affected under this permit, irrespective of the category of disturbance.
Affected Lands: In the South Lowland Mining area all of the mining was done in the southern portions of
that part of the permit. The area where mining was occurring last year is now in a reclamation status.
In the Upland Mining area the disturbance continued to expand slightly to the south as well as to the
west toward Coal Creek. Most of the early disturbances in this area have been placed in revegetation. At this
point, it appeazs the expansion of the mining and progress of the reclamation have achieved a reasonably
stable relationship, that is, for each acre of new disturbance more or less an acre of older disturbance is
reclaimed.
Future mining in the Upland Mining area will probably continue in or near the existing mining
disrurbances, but some of the minor mining azeas may be reclaimed.
The inventory of disturbances was requested by the Division as a result of an inspection by Al
Amundsen of the Division. Subsequently, a technical revision, as requested in the inspection report, was
submitted by the Division to present the data gathered and to adjust the bond. Upon further consideration
by the Division it was determined that because there was no affected land boundary specifically shown on the
permit maps the table on page 1 of the Mining Plan in the permit defined the amount of affected land that
Schmidt Construction 2002 Annual Report M-1988-044 Coal Creek Resources Page 1 of 4
