2000 Annual Reclamation Renort -Raton Creek Mine
Page 2
Specifications of the above revegetation work are as follows:
1. Prepare surface by plowing with wide-spaced disc equipment.
2. Application of phosphate fertilizer at a rate of 30 ib. per acre.
3. Application of cured manure, totalling approximately 450 c.y., incorporated into the top
4 inches of soil. Resulting 4 inches of soil contains approximately 25 percent organic
material by volume.
4. Drill seed approved seed mix, without shrub species. Follow with broadcast seeding of
approved seed mixture including shrub species. Copies of certifications of the two (2)
seed mixes accompany this report.
5. Apply and crimp approved long-stemmed hay mulch at a rate of 2 tons per acre.
Previously Revegetated Areas
EFMC revegetated approximately 26 acres of the reclaimed mine site area during the spring and
fall of 1995. Limited reseeding was conducted in 1996. The color~oded perimeters of each of
the revegetated areas, and reseeded areas, are shown on attached Figure 1, Mine Site.
Additional Monitoring Information:
EFMC did not conduct vegetation monitoring during the reporting period.
Noxious Weed Monitoring
EFMC continues to monitor a group of Canada Thistle in a 20' by 20' patch in the reclaimed
area east of the shop building. These plants were treated with an herbicide in 1998 and again in
the summer of 1999. EFMC applied Rodeo herbicide, manufactured by Monsanto, using a 1
solution. The thistle plants failed to regenerate during the reporting period.
EFMC monitored a small patch of Canada Thistle plants on the slope above the entrance to the
8' yard culvert. The plants were treated with Rodeo herbicide, manufactured by Monsanto, using
a 1 ~o solution. Spraying was conducted on two occasions, during June and July 2000. The
existing plants were effectively eliminated by the herbicide application.
EFMC plans to monitor the existing noxious weed locations as well as the entire reclaimed area
in the coming growing season, and will continue to mitigate noxious weed establishment.
Conclusions
Permanent vegetation on the mine site, both on topsoiled and non-topsoiled areas, continues to
show adequate establishment. EFMC will continue to closely monitor erosion control and
vegetation success on the reclaimed areas. Overall reclamation of the disturbed areas continues
to effectively minimize the mining impacts and promote establishment of the site to its approved
postmining land use capabilities.
