OLD STOCKPILE AREA: A detailed assessment of this area has not been
completed, but watching the growth over the first growing season clearly
indicated that the success rate was highly variable and would require
supplemental spot seeding to fill in the weak areas. Such seeding was
done and it appears that the spot seeding will probably correct the
growth deficiencies in the weak areas.
The Cottonwood and the Russian Olive trees seemed to have survived
the winter, but it is still too early to make an assessment of their
success.
It is planned that in early summer of 1985 this area will be
intensively sampled in order to establish a quantitative baseline
regarding the frequency, density, and cover of the vegetation. This
will aid in monitoring the growth and the development of the vegetation.
TRACT WDT: This showed highly similar success characteristics as the
Old Stockpile Area just described. In some places, the growth was quite
thick, while other areas showed very sparse growth. This may have been
due to uneven seed distribution or to local environmental differences.
The area was spot seeded this year and the rate of seed distribution was
intentionally kept as uniform as possible. If the weaknesses still are
present then it must be environmental and the cause would need to be
identified.
This area too will be intensively sampled this summer in order to
establish a quantitative baseline.
ABANDONED ROAD: This area received a supplemental seeding in 1984.
It appears to have taken quite well although minor rilling and shallow
gullying is appearing on the outslope. This does not appear to be
serious, but will be watched. The vegetation appears to be quite
strong on this area.
ORIGINAL ACCESS ROAD: Growth on this small area was patchy
As it turns out, the seed that was used on this area was quite
old and had not been discarded. In light of that it is truly
amazing anything came up. The area was spot seeded this year
the growth - fresh seed was used this time.
All other areas are too young to assess.
and weak.
to enhance
4
