Fountain Pit Annual Report
Additional Sheets
Permit M-82-155
Anniversary Date: December 31, 1997
Centennial Materials
The following information is keyed to the two annual report maps submitted with this
report.
Map 1: This map shows the current status of various lands within the permit as well as the
area expected to be affected in the coming year. The land anticipated to be affected by new
mining in 1998 is more than the land that was affected by new mining in 1997. This is
because, if the demand for product in 1997 continues in 1998 then more land will be disturbed
by new mining in 1998 than was disturbed by new mining in 1997.
The large area of topsoiled land in the bottom of the western portions of the pit will be
seeded in 1998. The larger portion (12.3 acres), noted as containing weeds and invaders, is
well protected by that vegetation, but the growth there are not the species desired. The smaller
(9.6 acre) area where there is no vegetation was created after the growing season and thus has
no growth. Most of these two areas will be seeded in 1998. However, a narrow portion of the
southern side of the currently unvegetated area will be left unneeded to provide for a merge
zone with the next topsoiling operation that will occur south of this area. That unneeded area
will be seeded when the next area of topsoiling is planted.
Topsoiling in 1998 will occur to the south of the area shown as topsoiled on this map.
This topsoiling will be done by hauling the soil stripped from the new mining area to the
bottom of the pit.
Other than these differences, there was little change in the site during 1997. Although
the amount of land affected by operations (moderate and major disturbance) will not change
significantly in 1998, the location of that land will shift somewhat. This is because the amount
of land that will be newly topsoiled in the bottom of the pit will approximately equal the
amount of land affected by new mining.
Map 2: This map simply distinguishes between the various lands that have been placed in
reclamation (minor disturbance lands) and the lands where operations are occurring
(major/moderate disturbance lands). The minor disturbance lands includes all lands that have
been seeded or topsoiled and are ready for seeding. This is not strictly consistent with the
definitions, but because the topsoiled lands will soon be seeded the distinction is primarily a
technical one and of little real significance.
Fountain Pit 1997 Annual Report IM-82-155) Due: Dec 31, 1997 Page 1
