SURFACE WATER MONITORING
' Two primary locations on Foidel Creek in the vicinity of the mine portal are
monitored. Station 800 is upstream of the portal and is operated by the
' USGS (Station 09243800). Station 8/2005 (referred to as Station 8 in this
report) is a short distance downstream of the portal: Water quality samples
are collected at Station 8 and flow readings are taken at Station 2005.
' Three primary locations on Fish Creek are monitored. Station 16 is located
upstream of Mine No. 2. It replaces Site 1001, which was located upstream
' of the point where Fish Creek enters Twentymlle Park. Site 1002/26•
(referred to as site 1002 in this report) is located on Fish Creek about
one-half way through its reach in Twentymile Park. Site 1003 is located in
the north end of Twentymile Park approximately 1-1~ miles upstream of the
confluence with Trout Creek. In addition, two sites to measure stream stage
only were established in 1987; Site 304 on Fish Creek adjacent to Well
006-AZ-3 and Site 307 on Foidel Creek adjacent to well 008-AU-2.
Flows
' The streams are gaged at all five primary locations. Typically, due to the
' size of the stream at the locations, they must be rated instead of using the
more accurate controlled section such as a flu However, due to extremely
low flows a cutthroat flume was used to rat the tream. The flow data for
the two streams l~ summarized on Table 24. "Plots of the historic flow
measurements on Foidel Creek are presented on Figures 13 through 16. The
data shows the typical seasonal variation with a rapid rise and fall of flow
rates during spring runoff. Water year 1987 was a very low runoff year. At
' Stations 800 and 8 the flow is maintained essentially year-round by the
discharge from the undergr//ound mine and discharges related to the surface
' mines. The data indicateb a fairly good correlation between upstream and
downstream stations on eac stream.
Water Quality
Water quality samples are collected at all the primary sites on a regular
basis. The water quality summaries for Foidel Creek are presented on Tables
' 25 to 28. The water quality summaries for Fish Creek are presented on
-6-
