increase and decline due to spring runoff. In addition they show the general decline in water
levels due to the relatively low runoff since 1987.
While the seasonal variation in water levels in the Foidel Creek alluvium is readily apparent, no
impact from the underground mining is evident. The average water levels in the three wells,
adjusted for differences in spring runoff, has not changed since monitoring began in 1979. The
Fish Creek alluvium water level data for the wells upstream of the tipple is presented for
baseline purposes only. The water level data for the Fish Creek alluvium wells do not show any
impact from the activities at the tipple or the Fish Creek Borehole.
Water Quality - The water quality data is summarized in Tables 14 to 19 for the Foidel Creek
wells and Tables 20 to 29 for the Fish Creek wells. The historic electrical conductivity
concentrations for the Foidel Creek wells are plotted on Figure 20. Seasonal variation occurs
in the wells, this is due to flushing effect of the relatively low dissolved solids surface water
which recharges the alluvial aquifers during spring runoff. There was a small increase in the
average salt content of the water in the 1988 and 1989 water years. This is probably due to the
relatively low runoff which has continued since 1987.
The water quality data for the Fish Creek Alluvial wells near the Fish Creek Borehole do not
indicate any impact from the discharge (Figure 54). The water quality in the Foidel Creek
alluvial wells upstream and downstream of the underground mine discharge similar. No impact
from the discharge is evident. The water is asodium-sulphate type. No increase in metal
concentrations was observed.
The historic field conductivity data for the alluvial wells near the tipple are presented on Figure
23. They show some indication of seasonal variation with higher levels in the winter and
decreasing levels following spring runoff. The data does not indicate any significant change in
water quality from previous years.
-5-
