Uttanr
Trinidad CO 81082 Division Director
Natural Resource Trustee
RE: 2005 Annual Hydrology Report Review, Golden Eagle Mine, #C-81-013
Dear Mr. Thompson:
The Division has completed review of the 2005 Annual Hydrology Reports (AHR) for the Golden
Eagle Mine. Reporting included water level and quality monitoring of alluvial wells and water
level monitoring of bedrock wells and the water flooding the mine workings.
Monitoring Freguencv
The monitoring frequency was met in accordance with the approved plan during 2005 with one
noted exception. Due to safety concerns as a result of methane production from the mine
workings, no water samples could be retrieved from locations GEM-1 and GEM-2. Given the
continuous sampling history for these wells since the mine was sealed and the current safety
concerns, the Division will not consider this excursion from the plan a compliance issue.
Surface Water Quantity and Quality
Surface water monitoring has been eliminated at this site. The mine has no appreciable impact
to the surface water system. All sediment ponds have been removed and reclaimed.
Ground Water Quantity and Quality
Data collected during 2005 indicate no unexpected or abnormal changes to ground water levels
from previously reported monitoring data. Monitoring indicates a slight water level decline in SF-
2 to near levels measured in 2000. Water level continues to steadily decline in NM-20, possibly
due to local dewatering from domestic use or coal bed methane dewatering activities.
Well Zone Distance from
mined area 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005
NM-20 Ovbn 6000 ft 349 ft 351 ft 364 ft 369 ft 373 ft 382 ft
NM-21 Coal 4000 ft 739 ft 701 ft 718 ft >750 >750 >750
NM-22 Ovbn 10,000 ft 407 ft 401 ft 407 ft 419 ft 409 ft 412 ft
SF-2 Ovbn 3000 ft 656 ft 641 ft 645 ft 645 ft 646 ft 660 ft
Office of Office of Colorado
Mined Land Reclamation Active and Inactive Mines Geological Survey
