• RESULTS
Data from the 1997 revegetation monitoring studies at the Seneca II-W Mine are presented in
Tables 1, 2, and 3 contained in Appendix 1. The list of plant species observed during these
studies (reclaimed and reference areas) are included in Table 8 in Appendix 2. Seed mixes
applied on areas revegetated in years 1991 through 1993 are included for reference in
Appendix 3. Site data from sample transects (orientation, slope, aspect, and initials of
samplers) are included as Table 9 in Appendix 4. Photographs of representative locations
within the 1991/1993 Reclaimed Area sampled in 1997 are included in Appendix 5
In the following descriptions, species that were encountered quantitatively (i.e. "hit" by a sample
point) are described first for a particular lifeform. Species listed as "also present" were not hit
but were present within one meter to either side of the sample transect.
1991/1993 Reclaimed Area (Photographs 1 through 4)
Cover (Table 1)
Native perennial cool season grass was the dominant life form in this unit with 34.3 percent of
total vegetation cover. Agassiz bluegrass (Poa agassizensis) and mountain brome
(Ceratochloa carinata) together accounted for two-thirds of this average. Slender wheatgrass
(Elymus trachycaulus) was also an important contributor. Western wheatgrass (Pascopyron
smithii) thickspike wheatgrass (Elymus lanceolatus fm. dasystachya), and sheep fescue
(Festuca brachyphylla ssp. coloradensis) were all minor contributors.
Introduced annual and biennial (orbs averaged 32.6 percent of total vegetation cover. Twolobe
speedwell (Pocilla biloba) accounted for almost half of this average. Prickly lettuce (Lactuca
serriola) accounted for over one-fourth of this average. Russian thistle (Salsola australis),
devil's shoestrings (Polygonum arenastrum), and pennycress (Thlaspi arvense) were all minor
contributors to this average. Introduced annual grasses averaged 18.0 percent of total
vegetation cover. Japanese brome (Bromus japonicus) accounted for nearly all of this total.
Cheatgrass (Anisantha tectorum) was a minor contributor. Native perennial fortis averaged 5.5
percent of total vegetation cover. Blue flax (Adenolinum lewisii) accounted for over half of this
average. Introduced perennial cool season grasses averaged 4.7 percent of total vegetation
• cover. Smooth brome (Bromopsis inermis) and intermediate wheatgrass (Thinopyrum
intermedium) accounted for almost all of this average.
5
