UPDATE 2000: Little additional reclamation was done in the last year due to a
lack of additional completed land to reclaim. Replanting of other areas that were adversely affected
by slumpage during the major April/May storm in 1999 was completed aher repair of the damages.
This included replanting of several hundred trees that were lost.
2000/2001 Affected Land
It is not expected that during the next yeaz any additional land will be disturbed that has
not already been disturbed. Mining is proceeding into the bottom of the slope below Peak N3 and
has been fully extended into the south end of the quarry. Mining in the south area of the quarry
has begun. A yellowish colored limestone that is marginally good for concrete aggregate is being
marketed for landscape purposes. White limestone underlying the yellow limestone will be entered
in the next year. Areas to be mined in the next year will be similar to those mined in the previous
year.
AMENDMENT IN DEVELOPMENT PROCESS (added in 2000)
Although it has been under review and consideration for a number of years, mostly
gathering baseline information needed for feasibility studies, the layback amendment is now in
development. This amendment, being prepared by Banks and Gesso, will involve a plan to mine a
short distance back into the USFS land west of the quarry. This will allow removal of the unstable
limestone remaining on the face of the quazry and allow sculpting the mountain face to make it
more attractive. This concept has been presented to City Council, the County Commissioners, the
Forest Service, and numerous homeowner's groups. It has received almost unanimous support.
Recent discussions with the Division answered some important questions and laid the groundwork
for completion and submittal of the amendment later this year.
Castle Concrete 2000 Annual Report M-77-211 Pikeview Quarry Page 4 of 4
