. values were 1,020, a little lower than the 1993 average of 1,188 mgll. The 1992 AHR presented <br />minimum and maximum values during a record from 4183 to 10!92. The range for sulfate was 64 <br />to 731. The range for TDS was 244 to 1,900. The 2000 values for sulfate and TDS fall within the <br />minimum and maximum values documented in the 1992 AHR, and are near the baseline values <br />collected during the period of 1983-1985 of 302 for sulfates and 965 for for TDS. <br />OVWM Groundwater Monitoring Wells: <br />One piezometer (OVWM) is installed in the fill at the Orchard Valley West Mine. This well is <br />currently monitored when accessible for water levels to evaluate fill stability. Monitoring results <br />from 2000 indicate water levels consistent with past monitoring. <br />North Fork Alluvium Groundwater Monitoring Wells: <br />Three (3) wells, MW-1, MW-2 and MW-3 (see Map No. 8-3) are completed in the North Fork of <br />the Gunnison alluvium. During 2000 the wells were monitored monthly for water levels and showed <br />typical seasonal fluctuations within previously established ranges. MW-1 and MW-3 were <br />monitored quarterly for quality during 2000 to monitor potential groundwater effects stemming from <br />the coal stockpile and load out facilities in the North Fork Valley. Well MW-1 is east of the ]oad- <br />out in an area that should be outside or above the azea of influence of the coal stockpile and loadout <br />area. Well MW-3 is southwest of the coal stockpile azea in a location that should see the full impact <br />of any potential groundwater degradation. The TDS level in the wells shows whether the <br />groundwater in the azea has been degraded. In 1993, the TDS in wells MW-1 and MW-3 were 388 <br />and 380 mg/1 respectively. These values have been referred to as baseline values. However, upon <br />• further review, this well seasonally experiences wide swings in its TDS values. Well MW-I had a <br />TDS level of 200 mgfl in the second quarter, 390 mg/I in the third quarter and 380 mg/1 in the fourth <br />quarter of 2000. Well MW-3 had TDS values of less than 380 mgll for all monitoring events. This <br />data would show that the stockpile and load-out aze not degrading the water in the alluvium. At the <br />request of the DMG, we are including a graph outlining the normal rise and fall of TDS at MWO1. <br />East Roatcap Creek Colluvium Groundwater Monitoring Wells: <br />Shallow groundwater monitoring wells, SM-5, SM-6, SM-7, SM-10 and SM-11 (see Map No. 4-1) <br />aze in the East Roatcap Creek drainage. The wells were monitored for water quality parameters, <br />water levels, and field parameters to detect impacts associated with mining in the west pod. All of <br />the wells were monitored semi-annually for water levels, field parameters and water quality. 5M-7 <br />is within the projected angle-of--draw of mine workings. <br />Water levels from the five Roatcap Creek colluvial wells continued to show typical seasonal <br />variability with water levels elevated in the spring and lower at the end of the year. No anomalies <br />or impacts on water levels were observed in 2000 at these wells. <br />Steven's Gulch Colluvium Groundwater Monitoring Wells: <br />Shallow groundwater monitoring wells, SM-1 and SM-9 (see Map No. 4-1) are in the Steven's <br />Gulch drainage. The wells are monitored for water quality parameters, water levels, and field <br />parameters to detect impacts associated with mining in the central pod. Required monitoring for <br />wells SM-1 and SM-9 was semi-annually during 2000 for water levels and field parameters. Well <br />• SM-1 is next to areas mined in 1991 and 1992 but showed no apparent impacts in the field data <br />3 <br />
