• Herbaceous Production (Table 5)
Herbaceous production for alfalfa averaged 5 pounds per acre, while for all species other than
alfalfa the average was 939 pounds per acre. Total herbaceous production for this reclaimed
area averaged 946 pounds per acre.
Woody Plant Density (Table 6)
Native shrubs averaged 639 individuals per acre. Big sagebrush and mountain snowberry each
contributed approximately one third of this total. Chokecherry (Padus virginiana ssp.
melanocarpa) averaged more than one-tenth of this total. Other contributing species were
Saskatoon serviceberry, bitterbrush, Gambel's oak, Wood's rose, prickly rose (Rosa sayQ, rubber
rabbitbrush, and Douglas rabbitbrush. Quaking aspen, a native tree, averaged 57 individuals per
acre. Total woody plant density for this area averaged 696 individuals per acre.
1998 Reclaimed Area
(Photographs 9 through 12)
Cover (Table 7)
Introduced annual and biennial forbs were the most dominant species in this young reclaimed
area averaging 58.8 percent of total vegetation cover. Devil's shoestrings (Polygonum
arenastrum) accounted for more than two-fifths and twolobe speedwell averaged more than a
quarter of this total. Together, Russian thistle (Salsola australis) and bull thistle (Cirsium vulgare)
averaged more than one-tenth of this total. Seven other species from this lifeform contributed to
measurable vegetation cover. Native perennial cool season grasses accounted for 29.1 of total
vegetation cover. Mountain brome averaged nearly half and slender wheatgrass contributed one
quarter of this total. Western wheatgrass provided one-fifth of this total. The balance was
comprised of Nelson needlegrass and Agassiz bluegrass. Introduced annual grasses contributed
• 5.2 percent of total vegetation cover. Japanese brome averaged more than four fifths of this total.
The balance was accounted for in equal parts by cheatgrass (Anisantha tectorum), cultivated oats
(Avena fatua var. saliva), and cereal rye (Secale cereale). Native perennial forbs averaged 3.8
percent of total vegetation cover. Blue flax accounted for more than half. The remaining half was
comprised of minor contributions by western yarrow (Achilles lanulosa), Rocky Mountain
penstemon (Penstemon strictus), Pacific aster (Virgulaster ascendens), western tickweed
(Hackelia floribunda), and American vetch. Introduced perennial cool season grasses accounted
for 1.4 percent of total vegetation cover. Four-fifths of this total was comprised of orchard grass
and the rest by meadow brome. Native annual and biennial forbs consisting of gumweed and
dragonhead (Oracocephalum parviilorum) averaged 0.9 percent of total vegetation cover.
Introduced perennial forbs also accounted for 0.9 percent of total vegetation cover and was
comprised of Canada thistle and Cicer milkvetch. Native shrubs and native trees were also found
in this reclaimed area, but did not contribute measurably to the total vegetation cover.
Herbaceous Production (Table 8)
Total herbaceous production for all species other than alfalfa averaged 725 pounds per acre..No
alfalfa was observed in this reclamation area.
Woody Plant Density (Table 9)
Native shrubs averaged 223 individuals per acre. Chokecherry averaged three-tenths of this
total. Mountain snowberry and Gambel's oak each contributed more than one-fifth of this total.
Big sagebrush averaged more than one-tenth of this total. Other contributing species were
Saskatoon serviceberry, golden currant (Ribes aureum), bitterbrush, Wood's rose, and prickly
rose. Native box elder (Negundo aceroides ssp. interius), a native tree, averaged 8 individuals
per acre. Total woody plant density for this area averaged 231 individuals per acre.
